"You Are Terrific": Carole Remick's Legacy Lives On Through Gift to Care Dimensions

Posted on October 5, 2026 by Shaun Neville

Carole Remick's stay at the Kaplan Family Hospice House lasted only 48 hours, but the peace and care she found there left a lasting impression. A $10,000 grant to Care Dimensions now carries on the legacy of a woman who spent her life supporting and encouraging others.

During her short stay at the Kaplan House, Carole looked out over the beautiful gardens and listened to calming music. But what mattered most was the kindness of the staff. At one point, a nurse asked what she could do to make Carole more comfortable. Her answer: "a coffee milkshake," which was happily prepared.

A Life Spent Believing in People

Carole Remick spent her career believing that anyone could succeed with the right support. She graduated from Regis College in 1954 and went on to teach high school English. She later earned a master's degree and taught English and journalism at Boston State College (now UMass Boston).

Colleagues and former students remember her as dynamic, persuasive, and impossible to say no to. Mary Kaye Leonard, Director of the Carole Remick Foundation, describes her as a "master cheerleader".

“Carole had a natural gift for quickly inspiring people to support her charitable causes,” said Mary Kaye. “She invited people in a way that made them eager to join her on any adventure; this was her superpower!!”

Carole also had a habit of repeating one phrase to the students and friends she mentored: "You are terrific."

The Christmas Carole Gift

Each December, the Carole Remick Foundation awards its "Christmas Carole" gift to a nonprofit organization with a mission and meaning connected to Carole's life. The date is intentional: December 25 was Carole's birthday. In December 2025, Care Dimensions was selected as the recipient.

"The Kaplan House means something special to Carole," Mary Kaye wrote in announcing the gift. "It was a peaceful exit from this life that could only happen in this special place."

The $10,000 gift supports two specific projects:

  • Refurbishment of the Healing Garden outside the Kaplan House chapel
  • Program support for Camp Stepping Stones, a summer bereavement camp for grieving children and their families

“We are deeply grateful to the Carole Remick Foundation for honoring Carole’s legacy in such a meaningful way,” said Heather Johnston, Vice President and Chief Development Officer. “Her belief in people and her generosity continue through this gift, which will help patients and families for years to come.”

A tribute brick is also being installed in the Garden of Remembrance at the Kaplan House, inscribed with Carole’s name and the words she was known for: "You are terrific."
