End-of-Life Doula Program

A new layer of support for patients and families

Just as a birth doula supports a family through a new arrival, an end-of-life doula walks alongside patients and loved ones through their end-of-life journeys.

Care Dimensions is proud to offer end-of-life doula services as a complement to our interdisciplinary hospice team. Our doulas provide non-medical, holistic support before, during, and after death.

What an End-of-Life Doula Does

At Care Dimensions, end-of-life doulas are specially certified and trained volunteers who work alongside the clinical team, which includes nurses, doctors, aides, social workers, and spiritual counselors. While expert staff are there to meet physical, emotional, and spiritual needs, doulas are attentive in a non-clinical perspective, often reaching patients and loved ones in different ways.

That support may include:

• Emotional support: A doula offers steady companionship and a compassionate presence, practicing active listening and providing anticipatory grief support for patients and loved ones alike, both before and after death.
• Spiritual support: From listening deeply to vigil sitting, doulas help establish a calm, serene environment tailored to each person’s beliefs and traditions.
• Interpersonal support: Families facing loss sometimes struggle to articulate how and what they are feeling. Doulas help facilitate difficult conversations, create a safe space for honesty, and gently alleviate the anxiety that often accompanies the end-of-life experience.
• Practical and logistical support: Doulas can assist with funeral planning, obituary writing, assist with advance directives such as the Five Wishes, legacy projects, light errands and household tasks, and organizing important documents and paperwork.
• Physical comfort: Doulas are trained to recognize the physical changes of the dying process and can offer compassionate presence and education to help families understand and feel less afraid of what they're witnessing.

How Doulas Work Alongside Our Team

End-of-life doulas are not a replacement for the clinical professionals who form the core of your Care Dimensions care team. They are an added layer, designed to extend our reach into the quieter, more personal dimensions of the end-of-life experience. A doula works in close collaboration with our team members to ensure that support is seamlessly coordinated.

Whether you're looking for a steady presence during a vigil, help navigating difficult family dynamics, support creating a meaningful ritual, or simply someone to sit and listen, a doula can help.
