A 'Paws For Celebration' at community cinema
Gloucester Daily Times

Cynthia "Cindy" Hendrickson, who wrote a book called "The Luckiest Dog Not Alive" about one dog’s journey into the afterlife, has organized quite a dog day this weekend.

The event at 12:30 p.m. on Sunday, March 18, is called  "Paws For Celebration" and it’s a fundraiser for Danvers-based Care Dimensions which trains therapy dogs for patients in hospice and people in assisted living.

“Everybody loves a dog, especially elderly people who can be lonely,” Hendrickson said. "They just light up when a dog is along.”

Hendrickson said she knows from experience with her own aging dad the difference a dog can make to an elderly. That experience, what she calls her really tough year”— 2015-16 — ended with both her father and her dog passing away within weeks of each other. For Hendrickson, who says “humor is my thing” writing "The Luckiest Dog Not Alive" was cathartic. So, too, is Sunday’s event.

What she and “a couple of friends” have organized is a dog lover’s delight. For on thing, they’ll be collecting “really cool pictures of your dogs” to display at the event. So if you have a dog, send his or her pictures along to info@mangosintegratedmarketing.com. For another thing, there will be an ongoing slideshow and a screening of  a “40- to 45-minute compilation of dog movies.”

Also on hand at Cape Ann's cozy Cape Ann Community Cinema, 21 Main St. in Gloucester, will be Pam Wasserman, of Good Dog Gallery on Rockport's Bearskin Neck, a professional dog portraitist, and "a number of other organizations."  Tickets are $20 at the door or eventbrite.com.
