Check and Balance: Supporting Walk for Hospice Behind the Scenes

Salem Five logoEach year at the Walk for Hospice you’ll see volunteers helping with everything from accepting pledge forms to restocking food and beverages. There’s an important group of volunteers you won’t see, however, because they operate out of an undisclosed location on the St. John’s Prep campus.

These are a handful of banking professionals from Salem Five who run the Finance Room and ensure that the cash and checks collected at the Walk equal the amount reported on the submitted pledge forms. With more than 75 years of combined Walk for Hospice finance experience, the Salem Five team makes sure that all cash gifts are accounted for properly.

“We handle cash donations at the Walk like we would in a bank branch,” said Salem Five Vice President and Team Leader Mark Murphy, who will be volunteering in the Finance Room for the 23rd time at this year’s Walk for Hospice. “People can trust that when they bring their cash to the Walk, there’s no question that it’s accurate and can be verified.”

Mark noted the need for a check-and-balance system of recording donations was much greater before online fundraising, but remains important, as some people do bring cash and checks to the event. The Finance Team includes tellers, managers, and other Salem Five employees who are familiar with counting cash and reconciling.
Hospice becomes personal for team members
Mark said he always believed in Care Dimensions’ mission and was impressed by the strong turnout at the Walk, but four years ago, it became personal when his grandmother went on our hospice service.

“She was in the hospital and she didn’t want to pass away there,” Mark recalled. “Within a couple of days, Care Dimensions had everything set up in her home. They fulfilled her wish. Without hospice, she couldn’t have come home from the hospital. I knew that the organization did good things, but we got to meet some of the people who do the work. They were compassionate, helpful, and understanding. It proved to me all the things that I assumed the organization did were true, and it was reassuring.”

“I help out because I want to make a difference for a cause I believe in,” said Candace Doucette, senior vice president, retail banking, who has volunteered with the Salem Five team for 13 years. Two of her co-workers told her they were grateful for the care given to their seriously ill family members. “They couldn’t say enough about the quality of care,” said Candace.

“My aunt and my mother-in-law received end-of-life care from Care Dimensions,” said Amy Marques, assistant vice president and digital bank manager, who has been helping with finances at the Walk for 14 years. “In addition, Care Dimensions provided a tremendous amount of support to our entire family as we were dealing with these losses. We cannot thank them enough for easing our burden during these difficult times.”
