Podcast: Hospice Myths and Misconceptions

Posted on January 6, 2020 by Veronica Giarla

In this latest episode of the Care Dimensions Learning Institute's podcast of Living Forever, Not an Option, our hosts Mary Crowe and Lyn Skarmeas discuss several myths and misconceptions surrounding hospice care. Lack of understanding or awareness of the services and support that hospice can bring to patients and families, as well as preconceived notions often perpetuate these misconceptions about hospice.

Myth #1 – Hospice is a place
Hospice is not a place but a philosophy of care that focuses on care and comfort as well as the quality of life of the individuals and families.  Hospice care usually takes place in whatever setting an individual calls home. This includes private homes, long-term care facilities and assisted living communities. Care Dimensions also has the unique ability to offer our patients and families care at the Kaplan Family Hospice House or the Care Dimensions Hospice House when additional help with symptom management is needed.

Myth #2 – Hospice care is limited to only 6 months
Mary explains that according to most Medicare, Medicaid and private insurance hospice benefit programs, hospice services may be provided to terminally ill beneficiaries who are certified by two physicians with a life expectancy of six months or less if their disease runs its normal course. However, if the patient lives beyond the initial six-month time period, they can continue receiving hospice care with an unlimited number of 60-day recertification periods.

This episode provides insight into the true nature of what hospice care is and all its benefits. Mary and Lyn continue to encourage listeners to join the community of people who are all looking for answers and are eager to have much-needed discussion on topics such as advanced illness, hospice care or end of life. This podcast episode helps point patients and caregivers in the right direction and provides more opportunities to become fully educated around hospice care.
